Baltic Sea Project

  Teachers and students from Helsinki, Vantaa, Tuusula, Oulu, Orivesi, and Vaasa took part in Seili camp and Platons academy as part of the Unesco's ASPNET Baltic Sea Project. The event took place in the Turku archipelago and it was a part of the Yhteinen Itämeri-project. One of the central themes was to encourage the students to take global responsibility for the world.  The participants arrived first in Turku by train after which they headed off to the historical Turku castle. A guide told the participants about the history of Turku castle as an eastern part of Sweden. They got even a chance to ask questions about the castle and its surroundings. After the visit, the journey continued to Hanka and Seili.  During the three-day camp, the students discussed Agenda 2030-goals and what kinds of actions are to be taken to reach them. What are climate policy and circular economy? Is it possible to achieve zero waste production and consumption? What are the main sustainable challenges present today in Estonia? How to create fairness with trade? Above all, who is responsible for answering the above-mentioned questions?  These were some of the relevant issues that experts, students and their teachers discussed on December 6, 2019, in Tallinn Botanic Garden on the seminar „From production to waste: How to make consumption fair?” organized by NGO Mondo within the Environmental Investment Center (KIK) project led by Tartu Environmental Education Center. At UNESCO ASPnet and BSP schools  we have common objectives based on shared values  to promote sustainable development and lifestyles and to nourish intercultural learning and appreciation of cultural diversity and heritage.  These goals are global, but, from our perspective, they're need to be addressed especially acutely in the Baltic Sea area. It’s mid-June and the second week Finnish students and teachers are enjoying their well-earned summer holidays. Already we have had a heat wave and powerful thunders more typical for July and August than late spring and early summer. Once again, we have experienced  the extreme weathers climate change brings about. If you, as a teacher or student, are interested in nature, climate change and the protection of Baltic Sea , there are several summer and autumn camps dealing with these issues. What’s better than wandering on the beautiful Baltic coasts with same minded people and, at the same time, learn about nature, explore, study and make observations.
