Valuing water - Join BSP Water Week!

March 22 has been known as World Water Day since 1992. This year UNESCO ASPnet Baltic Sea Project (BSP) schools will celebrate Water Week 22nd - 26th of March. The theme of UN Water Day this year is “Valuing water”. The theme challenges us to think about how water is important to our home, local environment, livelihoods, well-being and cultural practices. By thinking about all the different ways water benefits our lives we can value water and save it for everyone. More information about UN World Water Day

The schools can take part in Water Week in many different ways. You can choose the activities that are suitable for you. Most of them can be done even at home in case you are doing remote learning. You can also create your own ideas and share them with us. If you want to participate in the following activities, please register here. After that you will get the links to Water Week padlets. Also, the teacher can register the whole class at once.

OPTIONS FOR BSP WATER WEEK FOR SCHOOLS:

1. Share your video or photo on Padlet

On Padlet you can add your photos and videos and see the photos and videos by other students and teachers all around the Baltic Sea.

What kind of photos and videos can you add on Padlet?

First, we are collecting photos and videos with the theme “Valuing water”. Think about the following questions:

• What does water mean to you?
• Why is water important to you?
• What role does water play in your home, school or to the livelihoods in your area?
• What would you change about water in your area?

Take a picture or a video, add it on Padlet and write a short description of it in English.

Secondly, you can explore how water looks, sounds and feels. Wander somewhere by the water of your choice. Listen and see what the water looks and sounds like? Choose water that appeals to you. Think about what you want to communicate. For example, is the atmosphere of your water video soothing, threatening, fragile, sublime or happy? Take a video, add it on Padlet and write a short description of the atmosphere or the message of the video. Thirdly, you can also think about what kind of fun things you can do with water or different forms of water. Take a picture or a video, add it on Padlet and write a short description of it. What activities related to water do you like? This winter has been cold and snowy in Northern Europe. If there is still ice and snow in March, you can try building a snow sculpture, go ice fishing or take pictures of snowflakes. Read instructions how to take pictures of snowflakes here.

2. Find water idioms in your language

• Find idioms about water in your language or in a language you study (involve teachers of native language or foreign languages).
• Translate them into English.
• Find the English equivalent (if possible).
• Find pictures or make drawings of your idioms (involve teachers of visual arts).
• Organize an exhibition, real or virtual, to teach other people about water idioms in your language.
• Post the idioms on Padlet (but check, that all slips of text are the same size, otherwise they will not keep the line). Submit your idiom only if there is not such one already displayed.

3. Learn through water experiments

Download this collection of sample experiments for inspiration. You can also choose an experiment of your choice. Record a video of you doing the experiment and share it here.

How can you share what you did? - Årö digital camp

On 4th - 7th of May the international team of BSP will organize Årö digital camp. There we will have a workshop where you can present to other students what you did during the Water Week. We will also create a virtual exhibition of all the photos and videos of water and what water means to you. In the registration form you can tell if you are interested in presenting your work in Årö digital camp.
